Receipt scanning and expenses

Throw the paper away. The receipt stays in the app.

Photograph the receipt when you have been shopping, or upload the invoice as a PDF when you have shopped online. The store, the date, the total and every single line end up in the app and stay there, long after the paper receipt has faded or the PDF has gone missing.

The Bauhaus receipt is split evenly between Anna and John. Anna is waiting for John to pay his half. The receipt is also linked to the Kitchen renovation project, so it is easy to follow up on later.
How we thought about it

A receipt is not just an expense today. It is answers you will be looking for later.

That is why we save the items, the unit prices, the date, the store and much more.

We started by thinking about all the receipts in the drawer in the hall. There were the receipts from the weekly shop at Carrefour, the Bauhaus receipts from the kitchen renovation, and a couple that had already faded away completely. How could we digitize them, so we would keep better track?

The total on a receipt rarely answers what you wonder about afterwards. What did the tiles cost when we redid the kitchen last summer? Did we pay from the joint account, or did I put it on my card?

So we let the app read the whole receipt: every item, line by line, plus the shop, the date and the total. Then we added the option to add tags and link the receipt to a list or a project. That makes it easy to follow up afterwards on where the money went.

01 · The scan

One photo, twelve lines.

Anna photographs the receipt before she throws it away. Then EpiHem takes over and fills in the shop, the total, the date, the currency and every line with its quantity and unit price. Anna puts the tag Groceries on the receipt, and can then see as she goes how much they spend on the weekly shop in particular.

If EpiHem reads an item wrong, or an amount comes out wrong, you improve the scan easily by taking more photos of the receipt. And you are always in full control: every item and every detail can be changed afterwards. If you want to, you can create a receipt entirely by hand, for the smaller purchases, or when you did not get a receipt at all.

The same receipt, in the app on the phone and on the web on the computer. That makes it easy to follow up on and manage your receipts. Tap for the whole view.
At the till

You photograph the receipt, or upload the invoice as a PDF, once you have been shopping. You do not have to keep the receipt afterwards.

A second later

The shop, the date and the total are filled in, and the items are lined up with quantity and unit price.

Before you approve it

If the app misread a line you improve the scan with new photos, or change the lines yourself.

02 · On the list

The receipt goes back to the list it came from.

The weekly shop you did together has a list in the app. Link the receipt to it and it stays there under the items, with the shop, the date and the amount.

The next time somebody wonders what the week cost, the answer is in the same place as the shopping. And if you put tags on your receipts, you can see as you go how much you have spent on each tag.

03 · In the project

See which project the receipt belonged to.

If you have scanned a receipt that belongs to a project, you link it there easily, and choose how much of it went to the project: the whole receipt or only part of it.

So the question of what the kitchen lumber from Hornbach cost has an answer that does not depend on anybody remembering it. €340 on 13 June, paid from the joint account, half of it charged to the project.

04 · After a while

Six months of receipts become a picture.

Once you have scanned your receipts in EpiHem anyway, everything is there for statistics that answer the questions: where does the money go? Can we save on anything?

June 2026 for this household: €1,655.70, of which €1,000 on Renovation and €317 on Groceries. The same figures break down per shop and per member.

Also.

The things that do not need a heading of their own, but that you notice in the first week.

Split the receipt

Choose who paid and whether the cost should be shared. EpiHem keeps a running count of who owes whom, and suggests how to make it even again.

Your own payment sources

Revolut, the grocery card, the joint account. Colour them, pick the source as you scan, and see afterwards what was charged where.

Several currencies

A receipt in euros and one in kronor become two debts, one per currency. Nothing is converted and no rate is guessed.

Invoices too

A PDF of an invoice works as well as a photo of a receipt, so the bill can sit beside the grocery run.

Tags that hold together

The tag Renovation on a receipt finds the same tag on the list, in the project and on the recipe. What belongs together finds each other.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if we paid in different currencies?

Nothing is converted. A receipt in euros and one in kronor become two separate debts, each in its own currency, so nobody has to trust a rate the app has guessed.

Can I fix it if the app reads something wrong?

Yes. Everything can be changed manually, and you adjust exactly what you want to. For difficult receipts there is AI Enhance, and support for several photos of the same receipt.

Does everyone in the household need Premium?

No. One subscription covers the whole household, and every member gets Premium, receipt scanning and settlement included.
