Renovation: €452 in September. All of September so far: €1,504, €354 less than August. And day by day you see whether the month is running away, against the same days in August.
Nobody in the household added it up. You photographed the receipts and put a tag on them, and EpiHem turned the rest into statistics: the month day by day, the tags, the stores and who paid.
Below are four questions and four answers. All of them come out of the same receipts.
The question sounds about the same every time. What did we actually spend on the renovation? Is it Aldi or Carrefour where we shop the most? Is this month dearer than the last? Somebody guesses a number, somebody else disagrees, and then the conversation moves on.
Answering it properly takes an evening: log in to the bank, scroll through the statement and try to remember which purchase at Leroy Merlin belonged to the bathroom renovation and which to the garden. That evening rarely happens.
So we put the answer where it already was. You photograph the receipt and put a tag on it. That the question at the kitchen table then has an answer follows from that; it is not another chore.
Are we spending more on groceries than in the spring?
In Spending the tags stand as bars, the largest first. Tap Groceries and it opens into one bar per month, and the line above reads out the month you pick.
You choose the period: Month, This year, 12 months or Custom. The same tags over a longer time, and nobody entered a single figure.
The question arrives in the middle of something else. Have groceries got dearer?
You open Spending and unfold Groceries. The months stand side by side, and the one still running is marked.
The question comes back, and the answer is the same. September does not change because the month ended.
Where did the renovation money end up?
The map is the same money as the bars, drawn as bands. The tags stand on the left, the stores on the right, and every band is as wide as the money it carries. Receipts with several tags get a band of their own, Several tags, so nothing is counted twice.
Point at a band, or tap it on the phone, and it lifts with its amount on the line above. One more tap opens Receipts with the tag and the period already chosen.
On the phone the map sits under Spending, next to Bars. Tap Renovation and the band lifts, and the line above says €2,536 on receipts with only Renovation. Show 20 receipts opens the receipts behind the amount.
Which month cost the most this year?
The Spending by month card sits on the overview with the year's months side by side. Tap a bar and the month and its amount appear on the line above.
The month still running is hatched, so half of September does not pass for a frugal month.
And how does the app know all this?
The receipt from Aldi has fourteen items with quantity and unit price. Nobody typed in a line: the app read them out of the photo, you put the tag on and moved on.
Photos like that became September's bars, stores and map. That is the whole job, and it is already done by the time the question comes.

The cover shows the month as a line day by day, against the same days of the month before. Run along the line and it reads out a day, and a tap on the sentence under the amount compares with the same month last year.

No. They are built from receipts you have already scanned and the tags you put on them. No double entry and no separate bookkeeping.
In the bars it counts under each of its tags, and the page says how many such receipts the period has. On the map they get a band of their own, Several tags, so the total there adds up exactly.
