€1,656. Nine receipts, €331 a week on average, most of it at Hornbach.
Nobody in the household added it up. You photographed the receipts once the shopping was done, and EpiHem put the rest together. Finding out costs one tap, not an evening with the bank statement.
Below are four questions and four answers. All four come out of the same nine receipts.
The question sounds about the same every time. What did we actually spend on the renovation? Is it Carrefour or REWE that keeps adding up? Did it come out dearer than we said? Somebody guesses a number, somebody else disagrees, and then the conversation moves on.
Answering it properly takes an evening: log in to the bank, scroll through the statement and try to remember which purchase at Bauhaus belonged to the kitchen renovation and which to the deck. That evening rarely happens.
So we put the answer where it already was. You photograph the receipt and put a tag on it. That the question at the kitchen table then has an answer follows from that; it is not another chore.
What did we spend on the renovation in June?
The Renovation tag accounts for €1,000 of June's €1,656. Groceries took €317, which is 19 percent, Household €285 and Kids €54.
Nobody entered a single one of those figures. They come out of nine receipts and the tags you put on them while you were scanning.
The question arrives in the middle of something else. Did the renovation come out dearer than we said?
You open Statistics and pick June. Renovation sits at the top: €1,000, 60 percent.
The question comes back, and the answer is the same. June does not change because the month ended.
Where do we actually shop?
June came to eight stores, sorted by what they cost. Hornbach, Bauhaus and Leroy Merlin take the top three bars. Carrefour does not turn up until fourth, then Edeka, Decathlon, REWE and Albert Heijn.
Is it Carrefour or REWE that keeps adding up? This month it was neither, and you can see it at once. The list sorts itself, and the shop names come out of the receipts.
What do the children's activities cost?
All you did was put the Kids tag on the receipt while you were scanning it. After that the figure added itself up, month after month.
The same goes for every tag you make up yourselves. The household in the picture has six: Groceries, Household, Kids, Leisure, Renovation and Transport.
And how does the app know all this?
The receipt from Carrefour has twelve items with quantity and unit price. Nobody typed in a line: the app read them out of the photo, you put the tag on and moved on.
Nine photos like that became June's €1,656, eight stores and four tags. That is the whole job, and it is already done by the time the question comes.

June against May is worked out at the top: +305.8 percent. You see whether something is running away before it turns into a surprise.
Inside the month, W23, W24 and W25 stand as bars. The renovation week shows up without anyone pointing at it.
